Sudden Incidents

Assalaamu Alaikum :D

I've been watching the news quite a bit these last few days and I'm so saddened by the events that have taken place in New Orleans. This Hurricane makes its appearance and changes the lives of many people. It's just so scary ... that in a matter of days, the lives of these people would be changed forever. Allah Swt was not very happy it seems. The whole city has basically drowned under water and my mummy just told me that they are beginning to notice sharks, alligators and snakes in the water that surrounds all of the buildings, homes.

I feel, events like this should really get one to think. At the moment, life just may seem great and dandy and you may feel that nothing will ever change. But that isn't so. And to keep in mind incidents that would cause fatalities like this Hurricane has ... is real important because this is just another reminder that we are not in this duniya forever. We don't know when our time will come and because of that ... we should always be in preparation for the afterlife.

This reminds of what a sister was saying over the weekend while I was at a gathering, discussing hadiths and the Qur'an, that I attend every Sunday. And she said, specifying salaah (prayer), that one should read their salaah as if it was their last. I hear this so much and it gets to me each time. Because how do we know that we will get the opportunity to pray the next? Anything can happen within that little time frame. So when you pray, you pray properly, with concentration, that you are facing your Lord, praying to Him (Swt). I have a craving to better myself as a Muslimah, and I'm really trying my best to. One of the things that keeps me going is I'll ask myself ... "if I died right now, will I be satisfied with the life I've lived? Do I deserve to be granted entrance into Jannat-ul-Firdos?" It's so scary ... that we can do so much for ourselves, but yet ... we don't.

Ahhh too many thoughts haha May Allah Swt makes things easier upon me and everyone else insha'Allah ... ameen

*note* - Shab-e-Meraj tonight ... woo hoo

Ya habibati ... just as a reminder to myself first and then you, we should try our best to avoid laziness in all facets--especially when it comes to issues of our Creator and deen.

Let's make more of an effort to write out subhanahu wa ta'ala instead of Swt. That is better, insha Allah.

BarakAllahu feeki, Squeeky! That rhymes, hehe!

Assalaamu Alaikum anon,

JazaakAllahu khairaa ... I had a discussion about that before actually and the conclusion was that it didn't really matter how the abbreviations were written becuz when it is read, it isn't said as "s-w-t", but as "subhanahu wa ta'ala"

But you're right, no harm in writing the whole thing out, insha'Allah I'll work on that ... yay!

Alhamdulillah people may read it as what you said, but they may not, too.

Here's an interesting answer to writing such things as (S) and (SAW). I'm sure the same can be said about (Swt):

Question :

Is it permissible to write (S) or (SAWS) etc when mentioning the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), instead of writing out the blessing in full?.

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

What is prescribed is to write “salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa salaam (May Allaah send blessings and peace upon him)” in full, and not to write it in abbreviated form, such as writing (S) or (SAWS) etc.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

As it is prescribed to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in prayer when saying the tashahhud, and it is prescribed when giving khutbahs, saying du’aa’ and praying for forgiveness, and after the adhaan, and when entering and exiting the mosque, and when mentioning him in other circumstances, so it is more important to do so when writing his name in a book, letter, article and so on. So it is prescribed to write the blessing in full so as to fulfil the command that Allaah has given to us, and so that the reader will remember to say the blessing when he reads it. So we should not write the blessing on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in short form such as writing (S) or (SAWS) etc, or other forms that some writers use, because that is going against the command of Allaah in His Book, where He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Send your Salaah on (ask Allaah to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation, i.e. As‑Salaamu ‘Alaykum)”

[al-Ahzaab 33:56]

And that (writing it in abbreviated form) does not serve that purpose and is devoid of the virtue of writing “salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa salaam (May Allaah send blessings and peace upon him)” in full. Moreover the reader may not take notice of it and may not understand what is meant by it. It should also be noted that the symbol used for it is regarded as disapproved by the scholars, who warned against it.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Sometimes when things like this hurricane happen, I feel really arrogant for thinking about trivial issue and losing sight of the bigger picture.

I mean, it's really amazing, the power of Allah (swt), and really scary at the same time. It's like, no matter what those people did to prepare for the hurricane, they couldn't stop it. It makes you realize that Allah (swt) is the only One who has any real power. He says "Be" and it is.

SubhanAllah.
